Ancient Mayans in Oak

This week in Oak Class, the children have been busy in science investigating electrical conductors and insulators.  It was fascinating to discover that some metals samples didn’t behave quite as expected – having very low electrical conductivity.

Continuing with our exploration of the ancient Maya civilisation, the children learnt about the traditional ball game Pok-ta-Pok.  After learning about the cultural significance, the children tried out their own version of the game – using elbows, hips and knees only.  As you can imagine, this made for a very tricky (and very entertaining) challenge.

With a few clever adjustments, the class managed to design a more playable version of the game that kept the spirit of the original while being great fun.  Our Mayan “priest” and his assistant presided over the tournament, ensuring fairness and awarding pineapple points to the most skilful teams.

We feel all the staff know her, which is so special.”
